January 2009 Child health advocate, Kay Brackett, assists a family with Medicaid enrollment. | Child health advocate added to Healthcare Partnership staff In just eight weeks, Kay Brackett, has assisted in the successful enrollment of 46 children: 36 Medicaid and 10 in PeachCare. Of the 325,000 uninsured children in Georgia, over half may be eligible for Medicaid or PeachCare. Approximately 5,000 exist in Whitfield and Murray Counties. As a child health advocate, Brackett provides streamlined assistance for parents in the Medicaid and PeachCare enrollment and redermination process. This assistance is crucial especially during this time of recession when many are forced to choose between providing food and clothing for their children or paying for health care. These families wind up in the emergency room with what could have been a small problem, but ends up escalating into a serious problem due to lack of health insurance. |
July 2008 | In 2007, Dr. Robin Cleeland of Dalton State College was awarded theFaculty Enrichment Award which allowed her funding to conduct a community-based participatory research project. Partnered with theNorthwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership, Dr. Cleeland based her research on discussing the relationship between physical activity and healthy lifestyles in Whitfield and Murray Counties. Ninety-eight employee surveys were completed on-site at each of the three participating companies. Dr. Cleelandis in the process of assimilating the data and already sees some unexpected results. The Healthcare Partnership hopes to receive a complete report on the results in early October and plans to use them as a tool for research and community health planning. | Dr. Robin Cleeland of Dalton State College and NGHP Executive Director, Nancy Kennedy strategize to determine the focus of Dr. Cleeland's research project. |
